Project Description: In the wake of massive flooding following Hurricane Sandy, FCA manufactured a free-standing flood wall to enclose the Verizon Building at 140 West.

Unlike a typical installation of the Invisible Flood Control Wall, the project at 140 West demanded a free-standing design. The wall is not anchored into a foundation. Rather, massive steel beams on the top and bottom of the flood wall posts weight the system into place.

The flood wall system completely surrounds 140 West on all four sides, about 1000' linear feet.. The typical height is about 9'. The diagonal members are wind struts that keep the wall in place during erection.

Customized crossover ladders were fabricated to allow egress to the building while the floodwall is mobilized.

Verizon moved quickly to avoid a repetitive loss scenario facing the potential of future large-scale storms inundating New York City, and lower Manhattan in particular.

he planks weigh about 5' per foot, which is an easily managed weight for two workers stacking a flood panel into place.

The fire siamese connections were another challenge. Flood Control America fabricated a special stoplog that was able to pass temporary water lines though to the front. Due to the variations in the building and sidewalk conditions, each flood panel was of a varying width. These variable conditions created a difficult, but ultimately manageable, engineering and design challenge.
